The Story

Join us on Sunday, July 6th to welcome Martha McMahon of Inish Eile Farm, Pender Island.

Martha joins us to talk about her flock of rare Cotswolds sheep, the history of long wool sheep and commercial farming, as well as knitting to create community and relationships.

About Inish Eile Farm

Inish Eile is a small sheep farm on Pender Island. The words mean ‘other island’ in Irish as the farmer (Martha) is Irish-Canadian. The farm is dedicated to the preservation of Cotswold sheep, which is now a rare breed in Canada and in danger of disappearing.

Cotswold sheep are historically famous for their long lustrous fleeces. However, along with other long wool sheep, they fell into danger of extinction as industrial processes and fibre from fossil fuel and a shift to a focus on meat production made them not economically attractive to commercial sheep farmers.

Inish Eile is also home to 2 donkeys. Inish Eile farm produces yarn only from its own farm and so offers a speciality fibre unique to the farm.
